234 Residents Attend the first Emotional Well-Being Interactive Discussion

On October 18th at 2 p.m., the Hotel Oakland Village Health & Wellness Connection hosted the first Emotional Well-Being Discussion Group meeting. The meeting was led by on-site Licensed Clinical Psychologist Dr. Alex Leung. The topic was “Depression Symptoms & Treatments and Dementia of Alzheimer’s Type”. There were 234 residents attending the meeting. Dr. Leung said according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, depression affects more than 6.5 million of the 35 million Americans age 65 and older. Women are diagnosed with depression twice as often as men, possibly because they’re more at risk because of hormonal changes, including menopause. Research also found that 72 percent of patients over age 65 who participated in cognitive behavioral therapy sessions found it useful. “A combination of medication and psychotherapy is highly effective for helping patients feel better.”

During the meeting, many residents asked questions and Dr. Leung answered and explained the symptoms and treatment of depression and also provided a questionnaire to test depression. One of the residents also shared her experience with depression; she visited Dr. Leung more than 10 times and thought it was very helpful. Thank you to Dr. Alex Leung for providing an opportunity and platform for residents to discuss their mental health. Please see Nancy in the Wellness Office if you would like more information about depression, mental illness or Emotional Well-Being! Dr. Leung is also available in the clinic space if you would like to contact him directly. Please remember our new motto: “Activate Your Health Plan!” and join the many new Interactive Wellness Discussions.
